Sustainable Solutions: HyperCars

Who
What
Where:

As consumers confront the reality of escalating energy prices and our dependence on foreign oil, real transportation alternatives to fossil fuel dependence are appearing on the horizon. From the American Solar Challenge 2001 to electric vehicles and hyper cars, changes to our modes of transport are in the works! Both Honda and Toyota have hybrid-electric drive vehicles on the market today.
Why:

In an effort to combat increasing levels of smog and air pollution, the California Air Resources Board (ARB) in 1990 embarked on a plan to reduce vehicle emissions to zero through the use of zero emission vehicles (ZEVs). They mandated that at least 2 percent, 5 percent, and 10 percent of new car sales be zero-emitting by 1998, 2001 and 2003, respectively. Adjustments have been made to this mandate in 1996 and again in January 2001 to allow for cost constraints, lead-time, and technical challenges.
What California and Automakers are Doing:

California is leading our country toward a sustainable nonpolluting source of transportation solutions. ARB is setting up a program to distribute up to $68 million in incentive funds for consumers who buy or lease ZEVs
