The Mission – Delivering Sustainable Communities

The Challenge.  The current marketplace lacks adequate sustainable land developments.  Yet, the building community–planners, developers, architects, engineers, landscape architects, and contracts–have the skills to create development packages that can change the face of America’s communities.

Is it a “Mission Impossible” to provide sustainable land use choices that “meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?”[i] Traditional market practice is often driven by "old is out and new is in." What about a market practice where the product may be either old or new, but factors such as functionality, resource conservation and reduction of hazardous impacts are important? What about a market place where the product’s increased life span and reduced impact on health are the primary goals?

Urban Design

Venice, FL

Promoting excellent urban design details results in healthy communities in which people can thrive in wonderful places. Our design philosophy is holistic, integrating the various elements of infrastructure and public use opportunities to create pleasant, functional environments. Community identity and sense of place can be created with logical and consistent development guidelines. Clarity and simplicity is promoted by the use of graphic representations.

Bowie Urban Planners created a Sustainable 2001 Vision Plan for a portion of Venice , Florida . Bowie Urban Planners was retained by the City of Venice to recommend ways to integrate the redeveloped US 41 with Venice . The Bowie design philosophy is one which integrates the various elements of infrastructure and public use opportunities to create pleasant, functional environments. Community identity and sense of place are emphasized with logical and consistent development guidelines. Clarity and simplicity are promoted through well designed graphic representations.

The firm noted that improving intersecting streets is critical to linking the US41 Trail to business and residential areas adjoining the highway. Visioning played a critical role in making this project a success. By considering other community models that produced well economically and aesthetically functioning streets, Bowie Urban Planners assisted in implementing the largest transportation/capital-improvement program to affect Venice since construction of the Intracoastal Waterway . The American Society of Consulting Planners selected the Vision Plan for US 41 Business to receive the National 2002 Sustainability Award. Additionally, this project earned the Florida Planning and Zoning Association 2001 Outstanding Innovation Award.
